About the Show

The Incredible Tale of Robot Boy is a co-production with Schauspielhaus Bochum for ages 6 plus which opened in November 2019 and played to an audience capacity of 800.

In the most extraordinary high-tech laboratory a team of the world’s top scientists are attempting the impossible. Their mission is to create a robot with a real brain. Their aim is to push the boundaries of scientific discovery.

They succeed. And Robot Boy is born.

His world is the playground of the Laboratory; it is where he belongs. Robot Boy knows the Scientists have an important job to do and that he is there to help them, but sometimes he longs to explore beyond this world. We all yearn to visit unique and extraordinary places and for Robot Boy the most phenomenal place of all is inside his own imagination.

A poetic story about humanity, responsibility and life with dazzling puppetry, interactive film and performance. The Incredible Tale of the Little Robot Boy takes the audience on a journey full of curiosity and wonder.

This new production has been developed out of our Animating the Brain project, which was initially funded by the Wellcome Trust.

The Incredible Tale of Robot Boy, the film

We are delighted that this short film will premiere at The Festival of Curiosity in Dublin on Friday 17th July at 3.30pm.  The live screening will be followed directly by a Q&A with the show's director and Theatre-Rites' Aristic Director Sue Buckmaster and neuroscientist Dr Matthew Grubb from the Grubb Lab, Kings College London.

The stage version was a co-production with Schauspielhaus Bochum, their 2019 Christms show.  It has had quite an eventful life.  It opened in Germany last November and was due to run until May 2020.  In early December a pipe burst causing the theatre to close over Christmas, reopening in February - and then Covid struck.

We are absolutely delighted that we have been able to take the footage of the stage production and edit it into a 36 minute film.  The dialogue (in German) has been edited out and essentially we've created a silent sci-fi film.  We hope this film version will have future outings.

The Incredible Tale of Robot Boy at Schauspielhaus Bochum

We are thrilled to announce our new show – The Incredible Tale of Robot Boy – will be Schauspielhaus Bochum’s family show this Christmas period.

This new production has been developed out of our Animating the Brain project, which was initially funded by the Wellcome Trust and saw us work with schools and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Now, in the most extraordinary high-tech laboratory, a team of the world’s top scientists are attempting the impossible. Their mission is to create a robot with a real brain. Their aim is to push the boundaries of scientific discovery.

They succeed. And Robot Boy is born.

Our incredible tale is brought about by our incredible creative team. Directed by Sue Buckmaster, written by Jimmy Osborne, video design by Dick Straker, design by Joanna Scotcher, composed by Jessica Dannheisser, and puppet created by Stitches and Glue, Robot Boy is in very safe hands.

For children aged 6 plus, The Incredible Tale of Robot Boy is a poetic story about humanity, responsibility and life with dazzling puppetry, interactive film and performance. Premiering on 16 November 2019, join us at the Schauspielhaus Bochum for a journey full of curiosity and wonder.
